About Foodworks Cheese

The FoodWorks brand carries with it a proud heritage, tracing its lineage back from New York to Poland. The word maven (derived from the Yiddish “meyvn”) is a person with special knowledge, experience and expertise. Our cheese maven and founder, Heshy Gottesman, built our brand from Jerusalem Cheese in Monsey, New York.

In this famous little hamlet in New York, Heshy’s Pizza was a popular gathering spot for people throughout Rockland and North Bergen counties, straddling the border of New York and New Jersey. People would come from miles away to meet and enjoy great tasting food.  In addition to pizza, Heshy also produced the enormously popular Jerusalem Cheese products like Blintzes, Kreplach, Perogen, musaka, along with Muenster and mozzarella cheeses.

Born in Poland, Heshy Gottesman is the son of the Lashkowitzer Rebbe, and a 7th generation, direct descendant of Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, or BeSHT (“Possessor of the Good Name” or “Master of the Divine Name”) who founded the Hassidic spiritual movement. When the Germans invaded Poland during World War II, Heshy’s family fled to Siberia where they spent the war years in a state of near starvation.  After the war, the Gottesmans came to America where Heshy’s father had a following of Hassidim on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.  His father was known as a great Ba’al T’filah (prayer leader) but Heshy stood out as a singer of Jewish songs and as a creator of incredible Jewish delicacies.

I can’t really explain it,” says Heshy, but when I saw the skill and artistry that went into my mother’s cooking, I knew it was something that I wanted to master. and master it he did as evidenced by the Jerusalem Cheese products.

Today under Food Distributors, the Gottesmans’ proudly carry on this tradition of 100% pure and natural cheese production with uncompromising quality.  After all, Heshy wouldn’t want it any other way.
